Brandt seeks to attract and hire a ‘world-class’ Director of Operations for Mechanical Construction in our Houston office.  The Director of Field Operations will direct our Mechanical systems construction operations. Presently this director position is for Mechanical construction, however, over time we envision the position being expanded to cover the full Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) specialties, so candidates that have Mechanical and other MEP qualifications are welcome to apply. Our work environments include new building construction, industrial projects, specialty and renovation work, and commercial service. Brandt’s new Director of Field Operations, Mechanical Construction, will direct, develop, and oversee our mechanical construction operations in our Houston, TX operations. Brandt's Houston mechanical construction field operations are primarily focused today on Plumbing systems including Medical Systems, HVAC and Industrial Piping Systems, HVAC and Industrial Sheet Metal Systems.

Director of Field Operations, Mechanical Construction, Position Functions and Requirements

The primary functions of the Director of Field Operations, Mechanical Construction are:
A) Ensure superior performance by the field operations staff by implementing and executing performance standards that are aligned with Brandt’s culture, mission and goals and by fostering an environment of continuous performance.
B) Ensure all craft-related personnel are coached, mentored, evaluated, and fulfill performance expectations and execute corrective or disciplinary action as necessary.
C) Leverage your deep knowledge of commercial and Industrial HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping systems, apply this knowledge effectively in construction operations. If you also have electrical systems experience, this would be a plus.
D) You proactively build and maintain positive working relationships with Houston area Local Trade Unions.


The Director of Operations duties include (and are not limited to):

1. Plan, organize and staff key field supervisory positions to accommodate specific project requirements. Oversee and manage a large 200+ FTE workforce implementing industry-leading Mechanical Construction.
2. Create and manage structure and implement processes necessary to ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, compliance, safety and risk management policies and procedures.
3. Establish performance standards and follow through by providing career development and training opportunities to help consistently achieve and/or exceed these standards.
4. Monitor procurement activities of company equipment, machinery and supplies for the field operations group to ensure consistency and compliance with established policies.
5. Monitor construction labor costs (local rates) through administrative direction of on-site project superintendents to ensure each project is built on schedule and within budget.
6. Monitor superintendent relations with clients, architects, engineers and subcontractors to facilitate harmonious and productive construction activities.
7. Investigate potentially serious situations to circumvent such problems and/or promptly implement corrective measures as required.
8. Supervise/mentor the work of the general superintendents and redirect their efforts to project supervision as needed.
9. Develop supervisory training curriculum. Coordinate with local unions to understand and utilize all available training resources. Coordinate with Brandt University training coordinator to develop and implement customized, supplemental training.
10. Negotiate agreement renewals with local unions. Represent Brandt in all labor complaint resolutions and arbitration procedures.
11. Assist Pre-construction in the review of estimates as needed.
12. Monitor project closeout, as-builts and expedite punch list items to ensure final payments.
13. Be creative, with strong problem solving skills and ability to recognize productivity impacts and opportunities for productivity to recognize productivity impacts and opportunities for productivity enhancement; e.g., familiarity with Building Information Modeling
14. Be safety minded, realize and help others appreciate that safety is everyones job, not just a delegated responsibility for a safety officer.
15. Routine travel is required in this position (approximately 25%) to direct mechanical construction operations at job-sites in the Houston area or other regional locations.
16. Perform additional assignments as requested/needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience Requirements

 4-yr. engineering/construction management degree preferred; 
 15+ years working in mechanical construction required; experience with full MEP construction companies preferred;
 5+ years of senior leadership experience
 Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc., and their impact on project activities
 Experience building and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) for field construction monitoring costs, construction progress, safety, efficiency, resource utilization, manpower forecast, crew costs, labor cost forecast, tool and fleet cost analysis, etc. 
 Thorough understanding of safety and OSHA laws and best practices
 OSHA-30 certification (if not currently certified, must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire)
 Thorough understanding of prevailing wage laws
 Effective professional development strategies and mentoring skills
 Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility, be self-governing, be proactive, and responsible for accomplishment of the company mission without need for daily coaching or prompting from the VP of Operations;
 Superior communication and interpersonal skills (tact, diplomacy, influence, etc.)
 Exceptional organizational skills and problem solving, scheduling, and cost control abilities
 Excellent MS Office skills and ability/drive to learn new software systems (e.g., Primavera, and other custom software of Brandt)
 Must be able to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance
 Demonstrated history of good employee relations in past position a must;
 Ability to deliver results while working through others, and motivate a team culture that is respectful and supports the company values of excellence, integrity, and quality experience for our customers; 
 Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
 Strong command and use of English language required in this position; Spanish language a plus.
 Employment is contingent upon satisfying all jobsite-specific access requirements, with no outstanding restrictions from any jobsite or from working with any of Brandt’s partnering General Contractors, Owners, Customers, etc.
 Employment is contingent upon satisfying the active membership requirement in the appropriate local trade union soon after hiring.


Compensation

Salary is competitive, negotiable and commensurate with ability and experience; Benefits package is typical of other benefit packages for the Director of Field Operations, Mechanical Construction, position in Texas.

Timing

The Director of Field Operations, Mechanical Construction position is available immediately with an expected start in Q1-2019.  While speedy placement is desirable, it is Brandt’s objective to take the time necessary to find the best available candidate for this position.  Brandt realizes that the “right” candidate is likely to be working for another firm, and we are willing to work with you to make a smooth transition, as we expect the same from our outgoing employees.
